Hookah Time!!

Pre-history:

Hookahs were first thought of in western India around 500 years ago. The basic shape of a hookah consisted of a coconut, bamboo, and clay bowl.  Since then, the art of hookah has improved and spread from Turkey to Lebanon and Syria to Egypt and Morocco.  Each different place has their own terms for the tobacco they used; the most know today would be “shisha,” which is a mixture of tobacco, honey molasses, and dried fruit. In the United States hookah has been growing in popularity since the 60’s. Now just about every college head shop has hookah supplies and tobacco, and new hookah bars are always emerging.

I personally love hookah-ing, I smoke usually twice a day with different friends from my apartment complex. I started when I was 16 with a little mini light up hookah and after about four different little inexpensive hookahs I finally upgraded to a large one. I own a large blue four hose Egyptian hookah, and a large white three hose Ed Hardy hookah. I got the Ed Hardy on for a steal because I knew the owner of Fatty’s smoke shop in college station. But I personally love the blue one because of its blue velvet hoses, which do not need to be capped for a hit because they have ball bearings!

Tobacco A.K.A. Shisha:

Most people in the states use StarBuzz, some use Alwanna, others liguina. It only matters what your preference is, I look for good price and nice buzz, and so I choose Fantasia because they have a great selection. Most of flavors are named after different alcoholic beverages, which is very different from traditional tobacco.

The Set up:

Fill your base/vase with water or orange juice until your stem is only an inch down.

Fill your bowl with your favorite shisha only half way, and break up the tobacco.

Place a piece of foil around your bowl, and poke a spiral of tiny holes all they way around it.

Place 2 coals if you have a large hookah and one for a small hookah.

And wait a sec let it heat up and you’ve got an amazing hookah!
