When most Americans hear the term marijuana, the response is almost predictable. Conservatives label this plant as a drug that leads to the downfall of society. However, in order to fully argue for or against legalization, it is imperative that every voter inform him/herself properly. One should research the multiple uses for marijuana, beyond its most obvious tool, medication. Since legalization in California in 1996, marijuana has become its strongest cash crop. It would be illogical not to explore the profitable factors of this plant.

In the early 1900s, Henry Ford was one of many who experimented with cannabis fuel. It is recognized that ninety percent of all fossil fuel could have been replaced a long time ago with biomass, such as cannabis and cornstalks. Cannabis can be converted to gasoline at a fraction of the current costs we are experiencing today. Legalization for such use would not only aid in the reparations for our troubled economy, but would also aid in reversing the greenhouse effect. By using natural alternatives such as biomass, ending acid rain and sulfur-based smog would become a possibility.

Marijuana can also provide a strong fiber known as hemp. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp on their plantations for its profitable components. During that time, hemp was used for canvases, ships, ropes, and paper. Today, there are over twenty-five thousand products that can be made from hemp. Hemp fibers are stronger and longer than cotton and when worn, can block out the sun’s UV rays more effectively than any other fiber. Some will argue that the material is rough and uncomfortable; however, hemp can be made into a variety of fabrics, including linens.

Marijuana can also be used as a form of nourishment. The seed of the marijuana plant is rich in nutrients and has been proven to be beneficial to birds and other animals alike. By consuming marijuana, people can be treated without compromising their lungs, while acquiring multiple vitamins and nutrients such as Omega 6 and 3.The leaves can be eaten fresh, like lettuce leaves, or can be cooked. When it comes to cooking with marijuana, the possibilities are endless. Most think of only brownies and such, but one can cook virtually anything with marijuana by replacing the butter and flour.  Most are not aware that on October 7th of 2003, the United States government, as represented by the Health and Human Resources Department, was given a patent for cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants.

Economists believe that the prohibition on marijuana will be lifted during the recession, like that of alcohol during the depression. Some philosophers believe that in the future, people will look at this war on drugs as “madness of the masses.” Writings have been uncovered that support the theory of people using every part of this plant for the past eight thousand years. California has made fourteen million dollars from this cash crop within the past year alone, making it the number one cash crop for the state. Just imagine what our future as Americans would be like with a cleaner tomorrow, making profits and living off of a plant that we can grow in our own back yard.
